Cabo Girão: the glass floor over 580 metres, now €5

What you actually get

A viewpoint on the cliff edge with a section of glass floor, looking straight down at the sea and the terraces. The tourism board calls Cabo Girão the highest promontory in Europe, at 580 m.

It takes fifteen minutes unless the queue is long. There's a café and a car park, and the view is the whole visit.

The ticket, and why prices online disagree

It's €5 for anyone over 12. Children up to 12 and residents of Madeira go free. You can buy at the gate or on the SIMplifica portal, the same site that sells the walking permits.

The tariff changed on 1 January 2026, from €3 to €5, under a Portaria published on 27 October 2025. Guides written before that still say €3. The tourism board's own page carries both an old €2 line and the current €5 one.

So the answer to "is Cabo Girão free?" is no, and hasn't been for years. The road to it is free, and you can look at the cliff from the car park without paying.

When to go

Open 08:00 to 20:00, every day. Coaches arrive mid-morning and the glass gets busy, so the first hour and the last two are the calm ones.

Come in clear weather. The cliff is a view and nothing else, and in cloud you've paid €5 to stand in a white room.

There's no weather station at the cape. The reading above comes from Funchal, twelve kilometres east on the same coast. Beside it sits the mountain station, to show what the island is doing higher up.

The cable car nobody mentions

A separate line runs down to the fajãs, the strip of farmland at the foot of the cliff. It starts at Sítio do Rancho, a few minutes east. Two cabins, six seats each, every day of the week.

It goes to a different place from the skywalk and gives you the cliff from below, which is the better photograph. Most visitors never hear about it.

Almost everyone arrives by hire car or on a west-coast tour, and the cape is the first stop out of Funchal on most of them.
