How much does an east Madeira jeep tour cost?

Shared starting prices range from €55 to €89 per adult. Private starting prices range from €295 to €320 per group. The Balcões day shares the lowest shared starting price. The small Funchal group starts at the upper end. Lunch costs extra on all of them.

Which trip would you choose for a first visit?

I'd choose the open-roof Referta day for the main east stops in one day. It visits Pico do Arieiro and Santana before Ponta de São Lourenço. The Referta levada walk takes about 30 minutes. For a smaller shared group, try the small Funchal group. That trip also visits all three places. You'll need moderate fitness.

How long should I allow for the day?

Set aside seven to eight hours. The day with the most reviews takes seven hours from 09:00. The small Funchal group takes eight hours from 08:30. It runs from Monday to Saturday. Ask about the return time on the Balcões jeep day before booking. The two trip lengths don't agree. Plan for eight hours.

Do I need a car to join?

No. The Funchal jeep includes pickup from hotels and holiday rentals in Funchal. For pickup in Caniço or Câmara de Lobos, try the Balcões day. That pickup is included too. If you're driving from outside Funchal, the open UMM can provide free parking for the day. Ask about parking availability before booking.

What's included in the price?

The jeep ride and a guide are included on the shared trips. Lunch costs extra. On the Balcões day you also pay €4.50 for the walk. Book PR11 separately on SIMplifica for a start between 10:40 and 11:00. The small Funchal group excludes food and drinks as well as any entrance fees.

Can children join these tours?

Yes. The open-roof Referta day has child tickets for ages 3 to 10. Each booking needs someone aged 11 or over. Child tickets for the Balcões day start at four. Babies cannot join that trip. Ask about the conflicting minimum ages of 5 and 10 before booking the small Funchal group for a child.

How much fitness do I need?

Some trips need moderate fitness. That includes the Funchal jeep and the small Funchal group. Give both a miss if you have a back or spine injury or a heart condition, and the Funchal jeep if you're pregnant. Look elsewhere if you get travel sick. You'll swap seats every few stops on that trip.

What happens in bad weather?

Bad weather can cancel the Funchal jeep or the open UMM. Dress for the weather on the UMM trip. Weather or road conditions can change the route on the day with a swim. The swim stop depends on good weather. If you cancel your own booking, do it at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Later cancellations get no refund.

Can I walk or swim during the day?

Yes. The open UMM includes about 2 km on the Levada do Castelejo. Allow around 30 minutes for that walk. The day with two walks includes a guided levada walk at Ribeiro Frio and a walk to Guindaste. For a swim stop, try the day with a swim. Swimming depends on the weather.

Can I join from a cruise ship?

Yes. The Balcões jeep day includes pickup at Funchal's port between 08:40 and 08:50. The open UMM offers port pickup by arrangement for an extra charge. Give the ship name and docking time when booking the UMM. Add your disembarkation and reboarding times. The small Funchal group does not pick up at the port.
