Bad weather can cancel the Funchal jeep day or the west loop. Weather or road conditions can also change the two-pool route. Cancel your own booking at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Later cancellations get no refund.

What should I bring?

Bring swimwear and a beach towel for the pool stops. On the private UMM day you'll climb to around 1,500 metres. Pack a jacket for cooler weather up there. Lunch and paid pool entry cost extra. Tell the guide about any dietary needs when booking.

Can I swim or do a levada walk?

Yes. The two-pool day has swimming stops at Porto Moniz and Seixal. For a walk, the open UMM day includes about 30 minutes along a levada on Paul da Serra. It also allows two hours in Porto Moniz for lunch or a swim. Porto Moniz pool entry costs extra on both trips.

We started from the 93 4x4 days on the west of the island that guides and other providers sell on Viator. We read every one of them.

First the bar: 4.5 stars or more from at least 30 reviews, Viator and Tripadvisor counted together. 68 of the 93 fell short of that and stayed out. We also look at the Viator reviews on their own. A trip rated below 4.5 by five or more Viator travellers stays out, whatever the combined score says.

Then the fit. Does the trip do what this page promises? Do its details agree with each other? When the same trip is sold under two names, we show it once. 11 more trips passed the review bar but stayed out for those reasons.

The order comes from this score. It uses the exact rating. Ties go to the trip with more reviews.
