Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail

By Wildermadeira · listed in sunrise tours and guided hikes at Pico do Arieiro

Our take

I'd choose this for sunrise in the mountains followed by a coastal walk. You walk the Larano trail without a guide. Choose another hike if you want a guide with you.

Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro comes first. You can walk part of PR1 before returning to the van. A stop at Guindaste's glass platform follows. You then walk 7 km on Larano between Machico and Porto da Cruz.

Hotel pickup and drop-off from Funchal are included. Ask about the fee for pickup in Caniço. Lunch and drinks cost extra. The optional PR1 walk has an entry fee. Clouds can block the sunrise with no refund.

From the operator

In Wildermadeira's own words, from the Viator listing.

Your adventure begins with a hotel pick-up about 1.5 hours before sunrise

(exact time sent by 8:30 PM the day before via email or WhatsApp).

Dress warmly and wear good shoes, as mountain weather can differ greatly from Funchal.

At Pico do Arieiro, enjoy an unforgettable sunrise (weather permitting). Sometimes clouds may block the view — refunds are not possible in such cases. You can optionally hike part of the PR1 “Stairs of Heaven” trail (1.2 km, €3 fee) for breathtaking views, returning within about 45 minutes after sunrise.

The tour continues to the Glass Platform at Guindaste Viewpoint, where you can admire the ocean through a transparent floor.

The final adventure is the 7 km Larano Trail, a moderate 2.5-hour coastal hike between Machico and Porto da Cruz, revealing Madeira’s dramatic cliffs and wild beauty.

After the hike, relax as you’re dropped off at your hotel, ending a day filled with incredible landscapes and unforgettable moments.
