Our take

I'd look at Larano for a walk along the coast with a guide. The path runs from Porto da Cruz to Machico. People once used it to carry crops between the two.

The path looks out over the sea and rock formations along the coast. Pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle is included. Government fees cost extra. Allow 4 hours 30 minutes for the trip.

You need moderate fitness for the walk. Consider another route if you are prone to dizziness. It runs on Thursdays with an 08:45 departure. Bad weather or too few bookings can cancel the day.

In Madeira Free Spirit walks's own words, from the Viator listing.

We started this course in the village of Porto da Cruz and ended in Machico. The route is made by footpath, once used by locals to transport their crops from Porto da Cruz to Machico south.

Along the way we have fabulous views of the north coast and in some days you can see the island of Porto Santo.
